Bodie Island Light Station is still a stop you can make. The walk onto its boardwalk and observation platform is not part of the visit while a new repair project is under way—and the visitor center has a separate, longer closure.
That is worth sorting out before driving to the light station south of Nags Head. An open light station does not mean every familiar part of the stop is available.
The boardwalk work is a roughly four-month project
The National Park Service announced a November 2 start for rehabilitation of the boardwalk and observation platform. Those facilities will be closed during the approximately 120-day project. NPS says the light station remains open.
Crews are working on the elevated ramp, platform and covered seating, replacing deteriorated parts and improving protective treatments on pilings. Expect equipment, temporary barriers and modified routes near the work.
The agency describes completion this winter as weather-dependent. Treat that as a project estimate, not a date you can circle as a guaranteed reopening. A photograph of the boardwalk without barriers is not proof that access has resumed.
The visitor center is a different closure
The park’s Bodie Island page lists the Double Keepers’ Quarters visitor center as closed through mid-summer 2027 after internal damage from a January 2025 fire. That is separate from the boardwalk project. The outdoor grounds remain available subject to posted restrictions.
The same page describes lighthouse climbing as a summer activity. Do not read “light station open” as a promise that you can climb the tower on a November visit, or that every seasonal service is operating.
There is still a reason to stop
The present tower first showed its light on October 1, 1872. It was the third Bodie Island lighthouse, built north of Oregon Inlet after the first two stood to the south. That history is part of what makes the place more than a quick photograph of stripes.
For a visit now, plan around the grounds that are actually accessible. Follow the marked routes rather than treating a closed boardwalk as a suggestion. Check the park’s current alerts and conditions before leaving, especially if this stop is part of a longer drive.
Our recent Hatteras reopening report concerned a different part of the coast and a different set of restrictions. An update for one destination is not an all-clear for another.
Bodie Island’s address is 8210 Bodie Island Lighthouse Road, Nags Head. Go knowing which part of the visit is open, which part is under repair and which part needs another season.
